How lifestyle cataract surgery can transform your life

Discover how revolutionary, advanced-technology lenses can give you visual freedom in moments

There are two types of cataract surgery: Traditional and Lifestyle.

Traditional cataract surgery – With Traditional cataract surgery, we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a monofocal lens with one focus point. You will need glasses to see clearly at other distances.

Lifestyle cataract surgery – With Lifestyle cataract surgery, we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a advanced technology (EDoF, multifocal, trifocal) lens to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses for a broad range of distances.

Traditional cataract surgery is for those who:

  • Have been diagnosed with cataracts
  • Have visual symptoms that interfere with their daily activities
  • Want better vision to improve their quality of life

Lifestyle cataract surgery allows you to enjoy a broader range of vision than Traditional cataract surgery.

  • This option is ideal for those who have an active lifestyle and who value low dependence on glasses for distance and mid-range vision.
  • To be sure that you are suitable for lifestyle cataract surgery, we will need to examine your eyes at your initial consultation.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. However, the risks with modern cataract surgery are very low. A qualified specialist will go over these with you in detail at your appointment.
The alternative to having cataract surgery is not undergoing cataract surgery. You cannot treat cataracts with anything other than a surgical procedure. If you do not have your cataracts removed, they will continue to cause your visual acuity and contrast sensitivity to decline gradually.

When you have cataract surgery, your surgeon will discuss lens options with you.

There are generally three types of IOLs available to replace your natural lens, depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes. They are:

  1. Monofocal fixed-focus IOLs. Monofocal lenses provide clear vision at distance, intermediate or near ranges — but not all three at once. Toric IOLs to correct astigmatism also are classified as monofocal IOLs.
  2. Multifocal and Trifocal IOLs. A multifocal lens provides clear vision for a broad range distances.
  3. EDoF IOLs. An EDoF IOL is a type of refractive lens that enables focus on objects at a shorter range of distances, but avoids some of the known issues with multifocal and trifocal IOLs.

Most of these IOLs come in toric versions, which correct for astigmatism.

After Traditional cataract surgery, we will have removed your cataracts, and your vision will be back to its former level. You may need glasses with a small prescription to achieve your best possible vision.

After Lifestyle cataract surgery, we’ll have removed your cataracts and aimed to significantly reduce your dependency on glasses. Our patients receive lenses that enable them to see clearly for many of the tasks and activities they enjoy most.
