Get clearer vision with YAG laser capsulotomy

A great solution if you have posterior capsule opacification (PCO)
  • YAG laser capsulotomy is an outpatient procedure that can improve eyesight in patients presenting opacification of the posterior capsule following cataract surgery
  • Posterior capsule opacification generally develops within the first five years after cataract surgery but it may develop at different time points in the two eyes.
  • The aim of the YAG laser capsulotomy is to create a hole in this thickened capsule. This new opening in the capsule will allow the light to enter the eye more readily and improve your sight.
  • YAG laser capsulotomy is a one-off, quick, painless, and non-invasive laser procedure performed in the outpatient clinic
  • The treatment lasts for about 2 to 5 minutes and it is generally painless
  • Your vision will be blurred as a result of the dilating drops applied to your eye in preparation for the YAG laser procedure
  • For the first week after YAG laser capsulotomy, you are likely to experience floaters in your vision (seeing black dots and cobwebs in the field of vision), these will gradually decrease within a few days.
  • The YAG laser treatment is very safe but there is a small risk of inflammation or pressure rise in the eye
  • Swelling of the retina (cystoid macular oedema) causing the eyesight to become temporarily worse has been reported but it is a rare side effect that occurs in less than 1 in 100 patients treated with YAG laser
  • Damage to the adjacent structures in the eye such as the implant (artificial lens) is a rare side effect. Sometimes the laser beam may cause pitting on the surface of the lens implant but this effect does not result in any impairment of the vision
  • Possible small increased chance of retinal detachment in the future especially for short-sighted patients.
  • YAG laser capsulotomy is a one-off procedure
  • It is the safest and least invasive procedure to improve vision in presence of posterior capsule opacification
  • The procedure can be postponed if the posterior capsule opacification is not visually significant.
  • Our eye doctor performs the procedure in the outpatient department
  • After your vision is tested, you will be given dilating drops to enlarge the pupil
  • You will be seated in front of the laser device. Local anaesthetic drops will be placed in the eye so that the eye remains comfortable during the procedure
  • A contact lens will be applied to the front of the eye to help you to keep your eyelids open
  • During the treatment, you will notice several bright flashes of light
  • Immediately after the YAG laser treatment, your eyesight may be slightly blurred, and this should resolve within 12 hours
  • You will be provided with a prescription for a mild steroid drop to be used 3 times a day for 1 week to prevent any inflammation.
  • You must not drive home after this treatment
  • You may be a little light-sensitive for the first 24 hours
  • The improvement in eyesight will be noticeable from the day after the YAG laser capsulotomy procedure.
